Connection and compassion are core to wellbeing at Claremont College. Our mission is to create a safe environment where each child has the opportunity to function well, to build respectful relationships and enjoy a sense of belonging to a community that is grounded in strong Christian values.
We know that children learn best when they feel connected. Our staff are committed to ensuring children are feeling a sense of inclusion and belonging in all settings. In addition, we work collaboratively with parents and members of the wider community to foster each child’s wellbeing.
Whilst the student’s holistic wellbeing has always been an integral part of the school’s ethos, in 2025 Claremont College is partnering with Association of Independent Schools NSW to implement an evidence-based wellbeing framework across the three stages from Kindergarten to Year 6. The framework will address the student’s five wellbeing dimensions: academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
Wellbeing Programs
Social Emotional Learning Program
Our educators utilise the Open Parachute Mental Health Program as part of the PDHPE curriculum. Students learn skills and strategies to promote their self-awareness and self-management as well as develop an understanding of the importance of respectful relationships. The program uses clinically validated, research-based psychological skills-building exercises to boost resilience, social responsibility and increase students’ sense of connection and systems of support.
Ongoing Activities and Programs
Social connectedness is recognised as a fundamental aspect of wellbeing. At Claremont College, we provide a range of opportunities for students to build connections as well as develop skills in collaboration, leadership and respectful relationships. These include the Kindergarten and Year 6 ‘Buddy’ program, Pastoral Care groups based on House groups, Student Representative Council with our Deputy Principal of Wellbeing as well as a range of recess and lunchtime activities and clubs facilitated by our staff.
These activities nurture other aspects of a student’s wellbeing such as their spirituality, academics or physical wellbeing. Parents can enrol their children in a range of extra-curricular activities pre and post school that are provided onsite by external providers.
Wellbeing Staff Specialists
Claremont College has a full-time School Counsellor and a Nurse onsite from 9.00am to 3.00pm. Both professionals are involved in supporting students’ wellbeing in all aspects of school life.
Our School Counsellor provides individual counselling and support to parents and draws on evidence-based programs to provide more targeted support to the social and emotional growth of our students. Counselling sessions with students and parents are treated with respect, compassion and confidentiality.
Our Nursing staff provides professional health care to our students as well as liaising with parents and external health professionals to minimise the impact of illness on the student’s learning and individual wellbeing.
Community
Whilst Claremont College fosters a caring and inclusive school community, we also value our strong connections to the broader community. Our school has a close relationship with St Jude’s Anglican Church who provides us with an In-House Chaplain who collaborates with our educators to support the student’s spiritual wellbeing.
Over the course of the academic year, our students engage in a number of external community events such as visits to Dorothy Boyd Nursing Home, participation in the Coogee ANZAC Ceremony as well as supporting the Randwick Council’s End Violence Against Women and Children March. The school also hosts International Day bi-annually where we celebrate the cultural diversity of our student population as well as the wider community.
