CLAREMONT COLLEGE

Assessment at Claremont - some new things that we are doing

Claremont College has recently made changes to the way we provide feedback to parents about student achievement and progress throughout the year. These changes reflect the new NSW K-10 syllabuses for English and Mathematics. New processes for providing feedback to parents will take effect from Term 2, 2023, and will replace the feedback forms previously shared via students’ diaries. Semester reports will provide increased detail about your child’s achievement regarding the content areas and outcomes within both English and Mathematics. Throughout the year, and beyond reports, the following feedback about learning can be expected. *YEAR 3 TO YEAR 6* *Oral Reading Fluency Report*

- The Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) tool is developed by the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), of the University of Oregon, and used to screen for fluency. Fluency is the ability to read accurately, quickly and with expression, and is a critical factor necessary for reading comprehension. Teachers use the ORF to track the number of words students read correctly per minute (WCPM), and compare this total to benchmarks. For each child, reading accuracy and rate are identified as: experiencing difficulty, developing, competent or proficient. One-to-one assessment using this tool takes place in Terms 1, 2 and 4. - Feedback about oral reading fluency will be shared with parents via student diaries at the following times in the year:
- mid Term 1 (beginning 2024)
- mid to late Term 2 (beginning 2023)
- mid to late Term 4 (beginning 2023)

*Maze Report*

- The Maze tool is developed by the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), of the University of Oregon, and used to screen for reading comprehension. Students complete a cloze activity, in which they provide words otherwise omitted from a reading passage. Teachers track the number of words students provide correctly in context, and compare this total to benchmarks. For each child, reading comprehension is identified as: experiencing difficulty, developing, competent or proficient. One-to-one assessment using this tool takes place in Terms 1, 2 and 4. - Feedback about reading comprehension will be shared with parents via student diaries at the following times in the year:
- mid Term 1 (beginning 2024)
- mid to late Term 2 (beginning 2023) |
- mid to late Term 4 (beginning 2023)

*Numeracy Report*

- The Year 3-6 Numeracy Screener has been developed by the Association of Independent Schools of NSW, and is used by teachers to map students’ numeracy skills. Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need in order to use mathematics in a wide range of situations. Essential skills involve identifying numbers before and after, standard partitioning, place value, operations and their relations, fractions and decimals, and problem-solving. A group assessment takes place in Terms 1, 2 and 4 for all students in Year 3 to Year 6. For every child, each instructional priority is identified as: within the expected grade age, requiring monitoring, or requiring further intervention. - Feedback about numeracy will be shared with parents via student diaries at the following times in the year:
- mid Term 1 (beginning 2024)
- mid to late Term 2 (beginning 2023)
- mid to late Term 4 (beginning 2023)
