As I am writing this, today is a happy day. Our Years 1 to 6 students are back and settled into their new learning spaces and our new Kindy students have begun their seven year Primary School journey. This is a special time in the lives of all of the Kindy parents, our staff and especially for all of the students who have finally begun ‘big school’. 

We would like to warmly welcome all of our new Kindy students and the new students in other grades, to our school. We hope each and every one of you settles in quickly and you soon come to know Claremont College as a happy place to be and to belong.

Mrs Lina Gonzalez - Kindergarten Teacher

Mrs Lina Gonzalez has worked in 3 different states of Australia, where almost half of her career was dedicated to educating Indigenous children. She has a love and passion for teaching, as well as dancing and performing for CCFO (Colombian Cultural Folkloric Organisation), sharing her love for her Latin American culture. Mrs Gonzalez feels blessed to be teaching Kindergarten students at Claremont College this year and is looking forward to getting to know such a vibrant and unique school community.

Ms Kristina Wright - Year 2 Teacher

Ms Kristina Wright has rejoined Claremont College this year as a Teacher in the Year 2 learning space. In 2016, she worked at Claremont as an Intern Teacher on Years 2 and 6. For the past five years, Kristina has worked predominantly as a Stage 2 Teacher on Years 3 and 4. She is very excited to be returning to the Claremont College community and looks forward to meeting many new faces!

Miss Josie Alexander - Library Literature Teacher

Miss Alexander is our new Library Literature Teacher. She is from North Carolina where she attended Appalachian State University. She spent several years teaching primary school before coming to Claremont. Miss Alexander has a passion for instilling a love of reading and is ecstatic about working with all of our Claremont students.

We were delighted to receive an email this week from Nadia H (Year 6, 2015), an ex-student who completed her HSC last year and wanted to share her wonderful result. 

I would like to share my happiness with you about my HSC result. I became the Dux of Ascham for the Class of 2021. I have also been accepted into UNSW to study Medicine, which has always been my dream since I was young. 

Thank you for your support and teaching when I was at Claremont. I am so grateful that it has built a strong foundation and has enabled me to achieve these goals. I wish that Claremont can continue to be a great and successful school. 

Congratulations Nadia on your wonderful result and we wish you the very best for your continued studies.

It has been a wonderful start to this term and we would like to thank you for your commitment to keeping our Claremont community safe. Many of us may be feeling COVID fatigue, however at this early stage of the year, let’s continue to be mindful of the safety measures in place and remain vigilant. 

A few reminders:

• Thank you for completing your RAHT tests. From next week, please test every Monday and Wednesday morning at home, prior to coming to school.
• We have been informed that the next deliveries of RAHT kits will be early next week. We will keep you updated once we know more details.
• If your child/ren has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 28 days, you do not need to do the RAHT tests.
•  If your child displays any COVID-19 symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, nausea please complete a RAHT test and keep your child at home until they no longer show symptoms.

If your child has a positive RAHT result, please:

• Immediately notify NSW Health (via Service NSW app) and the school of the positive test by emailing office@claremont.nsw.edu.au
• Isolate for 7 days following the positive test.
• There is some confusion around the 7 day isolation period. This information from NSW Health website will help to clarify: if you were tested at 10am on Tuesday, you can leave isolation at 10am on the following Tuesday if you do not have any symptoms. You do not need to test before leaving self-isolation in NSW.

If your child tests positive, the main priority is for your child to rest and recover. From next week learning grids will be provided to your child/ren isolating if they are feeling well enough.

Next Friday 11 February we will hold our Induction of Student Leaders. This is a special event where our Year 6 students will make a pledge and will receive their leadership badge. We are very proud of our Year 6 students and look forward to continuing to support their leadership over the coming year. Due to the current restrictions, we will be unable to hold this in the hall as we usually do. Instead, weather permitting, we will hold this event outside and we welcome our Year 6 parents to attend. We are looking forward to this special time.

In the event of wet weather, we will need to hold the service in the School Hall with Year 6 only and their parents.

This week your child/ren were excited to find out who the teachers on their grade are. The students on all grades do not know yet, who will be the teacher who will be pastorally responsible for each of them personally, as this will be confirmed by Week 3. The reason for this is because we feel it is better for all of the children to get to know all of the staff on their grade equally and the same applies for the staff getting to know the students. The only times the students will be divided into their ‘class’ groups will be for their specialist classes.

During the first four weeks of term we will not be diarising any parent-teacher-student Goal Setting Meetings, however in the meantime, we ask that you make contact with the following staff if you have any urgent messages you need to have passed on:

Mrs Cameron or Miss McKersie for pastoral care discussions or concerns;
Mrs Ford for academic or curriculum discussions or concerns;

Congratulations to Archie T (Yr 5) who has raised $1747 for Kids with Cancer (https://fundraise.kidswithcancer.org.au/.../wigs-4-kids) and donating his long hair to Ella Wigmakers. Archie was given permission to grow his hair past his collar in order to achieve his goal to donate his hair to Wigs 4 Kids with Cancer.

In Weeks 4/5, your child’s Go-To Teacher (see next week’s newsletter) would like to meet you, the parents, individually with your child (except for the Kindergarten meetings that will be with the parents only). To achieve this we will be offering Zoom meeting times with each Teacher who will be alongside your child at school, to share your child’s goals for the term ahead and perhaps the year ahead, and to hear from you in regard to your goals for your child. To help guide these meetings there will be a questionnaire that will be emailed to you for completion, together with your child, before your meeting. 

Leading Up To Goal Setting Meetings

The lead-up and follow-up to our Goal Setting Meetings will be slightly different this year, following the feedback from the Perspectives surveys our school community completed last year. Many of our students, parents and staff felt that there was not adequate follow-up after our meetings at the beginning of previous years - so this is something we want to change and know we need to change. These Goal Setting Meetings will not be until the end of Week 4 and Week 5 because we want to make sure that we have had time to explicitly teach the students how to set achievable goals and to meet in small groups to identify individual goals.

Our Parent Information Evening for 2022 will be on Tuesday 15 February. This is an important evening for all parents (not children). Once again, we will hold this event virtually, where you will receive an email with a link for these presentations. The evening will provide an opportunity for you to ‘meet’ and hear from your child’s teachers, and to join a presentation which will be delivered by the Senior Leadership Team (Mrs Ford, Mrs Cameron & Mrs James) about the priorities for 2022.

Next Wednesday 9 February will be the first P&F meeting for 2022. Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will be holding the meeting at Coogee Diggers starting at 7:30pm.

It was lovely to welcome back all students to the library this week and to hear about how much reading they have enjoyed over the holidays. 

This week we focused on the delightful Chinese New Year story by author Christopher Cheng. He is the award winning author of more than 40 children’s books in print and digital formats. Christopher is also Ambassador for The National Centre for Australian Children’s Literature. 

Little brother is told by his brother and friends that he’s too small to help out at the Spring festival. He’s not strong enough to hold onto a kite, and too little to hold the dragon poles. But his Father says that he has a special job. What can it be? The story takes the reader on a journey through his village to see how he finds a way to join in! The Chinese illustrator Di Wu’s paintings recreate the magic of celebrating New Year in snowy rural northern China.

IPSHA Carnivals

There will be two IPSHA Representative Carnivals this term. IPSHA Swimming will be held on Tuesday 1  March, and IPSHA Cross Country on Saturday 26 March. Teams for these representative carnivals will be selected based on the results of our school carnivals this term.

Representative Sport

Each year selections take place for students in Year 6 (and on occasion, exceptional athletes in Year 5) to represent their school, region and state. Students who play at an ‘elite’ club or representative level are invited to trial for a number of sports throughout the year. For students in Year 5 and 6, please contact me as soon as possible if your child is at the expected standard in a particular sport and would like to attend. Please note, these trials take place in school hours and parents are responsible for attending with their child. IPSHA and CIS Sport trials include netball, basketball, cricket, rugby league, rugby union, AFL, golf, hockey, soccer, tennis and gymnastics.

Gala Days

A number of gala days will (COVID pending) be available for Year 3 to 6 students to participate in throughout the year. Students are encouraged to attend any trials or  training that may occur, and whilst every effort is made to place students in a team, this is not always possible. Although not compulsory, morning skills programs are a great way to develop the skills and confidence necessary to represent Claremont at a gala day/event. Information about each gala day will be communicated closer to the event, and students will need to register their interest to be eligible for selection. 

Communication and Registration

Each week information about sporting events, results, carnivals and featured students can be found in the newsletter. In addition, wet weather alerts for extra curricular sports will be communicated by SMS by 7:00am. 

Online registration is required for all extra-curricular sport programs, as well as our major Claremont carnivals: Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country. Please ensure registration is completed by the date specified to assist in the smooth running of all events. Registration links can be found on your Parent Portal noticeboard throughout the year. 

Code of Conduct

We take very seriously our students’ right to enjoy sport safely and enjoyably, whether played educationally, socially or competitively. We believe the utmost respect must be shown between students, staff, parents and officials at all times. Please take a minute to read with your child our “Sporting Code of Conduct” and ensure we model all areas of sport at Claremont in an appropriate spirit of fun, participation and encouragement.

CLAREMONT CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to Marnie L (Year 5) who ran at the Zone Little Athletics championships on the weekend. She placed 1st in 100m hurdles, 70m and relay. 2nd in the 200m and has progressed to regionals for all 5 events. She also broke records in the 200m, hurdles and the 100m with a time of 14.1 seconds. That record hasn’t been broken for 25 years! What an impressive achievement. Well done, Marnie.

Sporting Achievements

I encourage families to email me outlining your child’s success and participation in any sporting arena throughout the year, including photographs. Students enjoy being acknowledged for their achievements in class, at assembly or in the school newsletter. Sometimes our Mums and Dads also shine in sport and events, and we love to celebrate with you! Please send all correspondence to office@claremont.nsw.edu.au. 

I look forward to a wonderful year of sport, and am especially excited about seeing the continued success, camaraderie and character of Claremont students on and off the field. I invite you to contact me via the College office should you have any queries, concerns or feedback throughout the year.

Due to a number of children and staff having high risk allergies, our school is a nut aware zone. Peanut Butter and Nutella sandwiches, along with cookies, biscuits, muesli bars and other food products containing nuts must NOT be brought to school under any circumstances. This is very important, as highly allergic students may have an anaphylactic reaction leading to death. Some students are so sensitive that nuts on another person’s breath or on their hands can lead to a reaction. At this stage, products that “may contain traces of nuts” are permitted. Thank you for your cooperation with such a serious and important matter.

Again this year, treats, cakes or food will not be permitted for birthdays. Instead, when a child celebrates their birthday, they will be honoured in different ways eg: special jobs, singing, birthday badge/sticker/certificate etc. This is to avoid unnecessary sugar intake and to promote healthy eating whilst at school.

If your child suffers from a serious illness or allergy (including asthma) and requires medication to be administered during school hours, please contact Ms Sallie Neville in the office immediately. We would like to remind all parents about the traffic procedures we have implemented which help to make our school as safe as possible for the children, parents, staff and community. Children should be dropped off and collected in the SCHOOL ZONES on either Judge Street or Coogee Bay Road where teachers will be on duty from 8:15am to 8:45am and from 3:10pm until 3:30pm. 

You are also reminded of the 40kph school zone speed limit. The streets surrounding the school are quite narrow, so please slow down to ensure the safety of residents and of children. In order for us to get children safely into cars, it is imperative that all drivers comply with the following: 

• Please delay your arrival until after 3:15pm as queuing before 3:10pm causes major congestion. We often experience our worst problems with traffic because parents arrive early. Please allow us to get the children to the gates first to enable the traffic to flow more smoothly and to avoid us from having to ask you to move on. If your child is not at the gate upon your arrival be prepared to be directed by staff to go around the block.
• Please consider arriving closer to 3:30pm.
• Do not choose to park directly in front of the school gates. Follow staff instructions by moving forward to the front of the zone to the furthest available numbered cone, to enable as many cars as possible to pull up behind you. Please do this even if you are the only car in the zone upon your arrival.
• Do not jump the queue of traffic. We consider this to be very bad manners!
• If your child is not at the gate when you pull up, you will be asked to drive around the block again to keep the traffic moving and to comply with our traffic management plan.
• Please do not get out of your car as teachers will assist children if this is necessary.
• Despite the fact that we wish to move things quickly, please ensure that your child’s seat belt is securely fastened before pulling away from the curb.
• Please display a clear sign with the family name. This request is not only for new families. You can always request a laminated family name sign (or signs) at the office.
• Do not do U-turns anywhere within the vicinity of the school.
• Do not double park across the road on Coogee Bay Road and escort your child across the road.
• If you are in a queue do not move into the school zone until you know for certain that space is available. If you end up stopping in the ‘No Stopping’ zone, by law you are liable to be booked AND lose demerit points.
• Only drive along Judge St if you are collecting your child at the Judge St gate, not at Coogee Bay Rd gate.
• Do not park across the school or neighbours’ driveways if you are visiting the school or attending events or functions.
• Please be patient with each other. 

Please inform Grandparents or carers of these expectations should they collect your children. The cooperation and patience of all parents and carers, (Grandparents, babysitters and others) is essential if we are to make both our school pick up and drop off zones and the surrounding streets, as safe and efficient as possible for everyone.

Please remember that strict penalties apply in all school zones. In addition to a fine, demerit points also apply.

Orders can be placed for both recess and lunch through an online ordering system called Flexischools (www.flexischools.com.au ). You can also download the app and order from any smartphone or tablet device. Orders are required to be placed by 8:30am on the day the order is required, however, you can place orders up to four weeks in advance.

Recess orders are collected from the canteen by each child who has an order, lunch orders are collected by class lunch monitors from each class and brought back to the class, each child’s order is placed in individual bags with their name and ordered item on the bag.  If frozen items are ordered, your child will receive either a separate slip from the canteen  or a stamp on their brown bag and will need to collect it from the canteen. The slip or bag will need to be presented to the canteen staff.

IOUs

If for whatever reason your child does not receive a meal with the class bucket, ie your order didn’t go through, or was put through on the wrong day etc…..we offer IOUs. This will involve your child letting the teacher know they don’t have their food order, your child will need to collect an IOU form from the office. The office will call the you to confirm what food to order. They can then present this to the canteen and receive their meal. This IOU will then be sent home to you to arrange payment. This can be done through the Flexischools app.

Out of stock items

School bags: We are currently waiting for our order of new school bags to arrive. For the interim, students may use the school sports bag or alternate backpack until they are able to be purchased. We also encourage those seeking bags to reach out on WhatsApp groups as some second hand bags may be available. We will advise you when they are back in stock. 

Boys summer socks: Some sizes of boys socks are unavailable. In the interim, the uniform shop will stock a plain grey sock that can be worn until the correct socks arrive.

St Andrew’s Cathedral School will offer one full or part scholarship to a Claremont student (boy or girl) for entry into Year 7 2023. This scholarship is in recognition of the relationship between the two schools, and acknowledgement of the high standard of Claremont graduates. The scholarship, and amount of scholarship will be based on the following criteria:

• Results in the ACER Scholarship Selection Test which will be run at Claremont late February or early March 2022 TBC.
• Demonstrated commitment to school life at Claremont through Music, Drama, Sport, Leadership or other school programs.
• School reports and NAPLAN.

Free Trial Drum Lesson

Happy 2022! It's a new year, which means trying new things! If your child is in Years 1-6, I would love to extend a personal invitation for a free 20 minute trial drum lesson. 

Have a go, build esteem, confidence, new neural pathways in the brain and most importantly, have a whole lot of fun!
