Happy Valentine's Day
Every year I am grateful for Valentine’s Day. It comes at a time when the new school year has been up and running for a couple of weeks at full speed, at a time when people are connecting and relationships are being built, and when routines and expectations are being established for the year ahead. Valentine’s Day can serve as a reminder to stop, to reflect and to think about others. It is a time to be inspired to show gratitude, love and appreciation for the people and blessings in our lives.
Recently I have been encouraged by the powerful words from the well-known verse 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, which speaks about the characteristics of love.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
In our Claremont community, let us not shy away from expressing gratitude and appreciation. Let us be a place of kindness, compassion and love.
I wish you all a special day on Sunday.
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Swimming Carnival
Our Swimming Carnival on Wednesday was a great success. Congratulations to our students for their inspiring enthusiasm and remarkable achievements. Our House Captains did a brilliant job. Thank you to Mr Geering for organising such a wonderful event, and thank you to all the staff team who ensured the day went as smoothly as possible. Despite having no parents and cheers, it still proved to be a special and memorable day for our students. I encourage you to read Mr Geering's article featured in this newsletter and to view the captured photos of the day.
Student Leadership
Last week we congratulated our 2021 Year 6 Student Leaders. They have already proven to be fantastic leaders to their Kindergarten buddies and to others in our school community. This week we congratulated our Kindergarten to Year 5 Grade Captains and presented them with their leadership badge.

Throughout this year we will be explicitly teaching all of our students about Claremont College’s 10 Leadership Markers. We believe that it is important to nurture and mentor every child’s leadership development, and to educate what it means to be an effective leader, even from the early years of their schooling.
The Claremont College Leadership Markers include:
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills
- Organisational Skills
- Problem Solving Skills and Initiative
- Integrity and Social Justice
- Resilience, Grit, Reflectiveness and Growth Mindset
- Servant Leadership
- School Core Values of Collaboration, Innovation and Compassion
- Community Involvement and Contribution of Co-Curricular Activities
- Commitment to Learning
- School Code of Conduct
More information about these Leadership Markers will be communicated throughout the year.

Parent Information Evening
Due to the current COVID19 restrictions, we were unable to hold the annual Parent Information Evening at school. Staff have worked collaboratively to create a ‘virtual’ presentation. I encourage you to watch the presentations this evening or over the course of the weekend, and to read the accompanying ‘handout’ notes. You can access all of the presentations, including the Senior Leadership’s 2021 Vision via email later this afternoon. The presentations are password protected, as some of these presentations may contain student photos.
School Canteen
One of our priorities for 2021 is to re-establish our School Canteen. The process has already begun, with the Expression of Interest and the Application for Tender advertised this week. Information can be found on our School Website. We look forward to filling this position, and providing this service to our students and families.
In the meantime, we are grateful to the parents who have offered to serve snacks from the canteen on Fridays this term. This will be a great opportunity for our students to practise using coins. Feel free to send your child with some coins beginning next Friday, however, we ask that you limit this to a maximum of $3. Snacks will include options such as fruit, breadsticks and muffins. More information will be provided in next week’s newsletter. Thank you to our mums Melisse, Helen and Aysun for your assistance - what a lovely and generous gesture to help care for our school community.
School Uniform
It has been wonderful to see our students starting to wear the new uniform - they look fantastic. You may remember a couple of years ago that we mentioned in our Parent Information Evening that our goal was to update the uniform, and after a long process, our students are finally able to wear them with pride. A particular highlight for many of us has been the girls' shorts. We are incredibly proud to have a uniform that encourages our girls to be active, to have a choice of either wearing the shorts or the pinafore dress and to be comfortable when learning and playing... a great message to send to both our girls and boys.
As we embark on a 2 year transition from the pre-existing uniform into the new, we understand that there may be a 'mix' of the uniforms. Eg: a boy may wear the new shirt with the older shorts, etc. With the new blazer not yet in stock, wearing a mix of uniforms may be unavoidable. Please note that the new boys’ shirt can be worn as their formal shirt (with a tie and the shirt tucked in) or as their less formal shirt (with no tie and the shirt not tucked in). Our new range does not include a separate plain white shirt.
Our P&F President is in communication with the supplier, Ranier, to provide them with parent feedback. If you have any further feedback for Ranier, please contact Melisse Lee.
Staff News
As you are aware, Mrs Tara Barr has stepped into the role of Acting Deputy Principal for Term 1. What you may not know is that Mrs Barr has taught for over 13 years, both in Ireland and Australia. She has been part of our school executive team for many years, leading and supporting our Specialist staff. Mrs Barr has recently attained the prestigious award 'Highly Accomplished Teacher' (NESA) and 'Professional Excellence' (ISTAA), and she is a valuable new addition to our Senior Leadership Team.
Our Music Teacher, Miss Madi Holness, is unfortunately unable to continue in her role. The position was advertised today and we look forward to interviewing potential applicants. In the meantime, we will employ a casual Music Teacher and Mrs Barr will run a combined choir to keep the music alive during lunchtimes.
A big congratulations to Mrs Beatrix Kirkland, now a mother to another little boy! Frederick (Freddie) Kirkland was born on Wednesday evening. We are thrilled to hear that mummy and Freddie are doing very well, and that Mrs Kirkland, her husband Ollie and son Teddy are loving their new addition to their family. Mrs Kirkland looks forward to visiting school in the not too distant future.
And with Valentine’s Day around the corner…
It is with joy and delight that we announce the engagement of two of our dedicated staff members, Mr Julian Ko and Miss Deborah Tan. We wish them every happiness in their lives together and we look forward to the lead up to the ‘big day’!
