Your Kid's Generation - Gen Alpha
Recently I attended a conference that focussed on ‘Generation Alpha’. A generation that is more global, digital, social, mobile and visual than any other generation. These are the kids who were born between 2010 and 2024 - your kids. Understanding the trends of Gen Alpha is incredibly important as it helps us have insight into our kids’ strengths, the areas they may need more support in, and it gives us some understanding about their future.
According to McCrindle & Fell (2022), Gen Alpha are:
- More likely to have jobs that are not yet created, such as a ‘Space Tourism Agent’;
- Influencing the purchasing power of households;
- Predicted to outnumber the Baby Boomers within the next 4 years;
- Likely to live into the 22nd century;
- More likely to have older parents, more diverse families, wealthier backgrounds, smaller family size and longer life expectancy;
- More like to have shorter attention spans and less social formation;
- More culturally diverse compared to previous generations;
- More adaptable than previous generations;
- Less proficient in assessing risk; and
- Formally more educated than any previous generation.
Being responsible for raising children in today’s world is no easy task. Parenting is a wonderful privilege and yet it is an enormous responsibility. This conference reminded me how fast paced our world is, and how essential it is that we remain agile and compassionate, and to be relevant and approachable adults, so that our kids turn to us when faced with new challenges. The challenges they will face in their future will be different to the ones we have faced. Connecting with your child and instilling a feeling of being ‘on the same team’ will help your child thrive.
For further information about your child’s generation and the impact this can have on their learning and wellbeing, I recommend reading Generation Alpha: Understanding Our Children and Helping Them Thrive by McCrindle & Fell.
Looking Ahead…
Next week is our last week of Term 2, so I draw your attention to some very important information below regarding your child’s School Report and Parent/Teacher Interviews that will occur next Tuesday 21 June (and Thursday 23 June for Mrs Eu and Mrs Davis). I trust you find the time with your child’s teacher very valuable.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend with your loved ones.
Be kind, be safe.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
