To assist with your forward planning, here are some important details about our concert. Please note that we will provide further details next week. 

• The School Concert '140' is on Tuesday 30 August at The City Recital Hall in Angel Place, near Wynyard.  
• The students (other than the main cast and string performers) are to arrive at the venue between 5:30pm and 5:45pm. Staff will be in the foyer to welcome them and direct them to their teachers.  
• Parents are welcome to arrive to be seated from 6pm.  
• The Concert will begin at 6:30pm. 
• On the day of the concert, from lunchtime (Primary 12:30pm-1:00pm, Infants 1:00pm-1:40pm) onwards, Students have the option to leave school early. The Team Kids Service will close at 4:45pm. 
• Students will also have the option to arrive at school late the morning after the concert, to arrive by recess at any time prior to 10:40am.

Next week Miss McKersie, Ms De Rossi, Mrs Ford and I will once again be visiting each learning space to work with the classroom teachers with all students on their goals. We will be helping your child to reflect and evaluate how they have tracking with their existing goals. For some, it will be time to set updated goals.

You may recall that this year we introduced Goal Setting across the school, to help your child understand the importance of setting SMART goals. They now know that SMART goals need to be :

Specific
Measurable
Actionable
Realistic
Timely

At the beginning of the year, many children found it challenging to set goals. For example, a Year 4 student said that wanted to get better at their times tables. Through discussion, they came to realise that they needed to apply the SMART Goal framework. This same student now can identify they want to become more accurate with their 6x tables, they want to achieve greater accuracy within 5 weeks of practising twice a week, and they will know they have achieved this goal by testing themselves weekly and tracking their score over time. 

It’s clear that learning how to apply this framework will benefit your child well into the future. We know that spending time focussing on their goals will:

• Provide a sense of agency and a sense of purpose (development of self-assurance)
• Increase self management skills  - (supporting the growth of independence and resilience)
• Provide opportunities for developing and experiencing intrinsic motivation. We know that children often respond well to a system of external rewards. However, we know that intrinsic goal pursuits can result in increased performance and persistence over time. They help us connect with values that strongly influence longer term wellbeing. 
• Working towards a goal and making this explicit to the students gives them the learning experience of delayed gratification and perseverance. Not every success in life is instant.

We will be continuing to focus on the following three areas:

1. Wellbeing Goal
2. Academic Goal
3. Digital Wellness Goal

Your child’s goals will be recorded in their diary. We encourage you to have a discussion at home about the Term 3 SMART goals they have set for themselves, and to celebrate accomplishments along the way to promote persistence and encourage confidence. We ask that you talk to your child about the growth in the process, even if the specific goal is not achieved - ‘if you reach for the moon and miss, you’ll end up in the stars’.

As we approach the halfway point of Term 3, we are still aware of the ongoing cases of COVID-19 infections, and ongoing flu, colds and respiratory illness within the school community. With this in mind, we will continue to maintain our high standards of health and hygiene practices and expectations, and ask you to not hesitate getting in touch with us if you need to discuss your family context or any concerns/questions. 

Our safety measures will remain in place, including:

• Students and staff staying home if they are unwell, and parents refraining from visiting the school if unwell
• The wearing of face masks is highly encouraged.
• Good personal hygiene practices
• Vaccinations up to date (including flu shots)
• The ventilation of our spaces
• Physical distancing and the consideration of how events and gatherings are held

As the pandemic continues it is easy to become complacent, so we ask for your support in being vigilant, as we care for each other and our school community.

A LETTER WAS READ AT THE RANDWICK COUNCIL MEETING IN 1933 PROTESTING THE DISPLAY OF YOUNG WOMEN WHO MARCHED ON THE BEACH AT THE LADY GAME CUP COMPETITION. 

I wondered why a Broken Hill newspaper carried this story about Sydney’s beach girls. Following Mina Wylie (the Claremont champion swimmer and winner of the Silver Medal at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games) Doris McIver went on to be the leader of the Randwick Women’s Beach team which competed with several Sydney beach teams for the Lady Game Cup from 1932. Dressed demurely in a one-piece costume, Doris proudly carried the flag for the Randwick Beaches Team and was criticised for the evil of showing too much skin, alongside hundreds of women from other teams and up to 40,000 onlookers when the competition was held on various Sydney beaches. The acrimonious debate went on throughout the 1930s. It signaled the rise of modernity and practical feminism: the power of women to compete in sports previously confined to men and the right of women to enhance their fitness, health and beauty. Beach culture and women’s swimwear became hot topics as the black heavy woollen swim attire gave way to stylish, colourful and practical costumes. The letter read out at Randwick Council, comparing women on show with animals at the Royal Easter Show was illuminating. (see the Barrier Miner, Broken Hill, 8 Feb. 1933, p 1.)

This week, Claremont College participated in Australia’s annual celebration of Science and Technology. National Science Week runs every year in August, featuring more than a thousand events around Australia. This year’s theme was “Glass: more than meets the eye”. Read on to discover how our students celebrated science this year. 

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten, we love Science lessons. In Term 3, students have been learning about the weather. They have been enjoying looking at mapping the daily weather and discussing why the weather moves in different ways. They have recently done an experiment with the wind, trying to measure its strength using different materials which they loved.

“We did an experiment where some colours went up the plants. Mine didn’t work but that’s okay in Science.” Selena J

Year 1

Year 1 has been learning about how animals grow and change. We have observed how chicken and butterflies change in our learning space. We watched our chickens hatch and butterflies emerge from their chrysalis. We have also learned about how animals can be categorised by their external features. It has been such an exciting week in Year 1.

Year 2

Lava Lamps

In celebration of National Science Week, Year 2 completed their own science experiment in small groups to explore liquid density. Prior to the experiment, students read through the materials list and the method, and were asked to write a hypothesis. This created excitement amongst the Year 2 students, with many hypothesising that adding an aspirin tablet to water and oil may result in an explosion. Although there were no explosions in Year 2 this week, as many had anticipated, students became mesmerised by the lava lamp they had created. As students became captivated by the effect of the aspirin tablet, watching the colourful bubbles move throughout the jar, they were able to compare the density of water and oil.

“It was amazing when the aspirin tablet was in the jar and made the bubbles.” Chloe H

“My favourite part of the experiment was when we put the tablet in because it was so fun seeing it bubble up. Our group worked really well and we all tried to take turns with our jobs so it was fair.” Joshua P

Year 3 

On Monday afternoon, Year 3 students enjoyed making paper models of flying seeds. The students modified their models using paper clips and feathers to help their models fly faster or even further. Our rainbow room was converted into a cinema where students could watch a special documentary about plastic in our oceans. Students shared their reflections using a Padlet. To celebrate this year’s theme, “Glass: more than meets the eye”, students studied patterns made by glass. They went on to make their own patterns and used their iPads to take photos of patterns they could see around their learning space. Year 3 students also enjoyed expanding their vocabulary about glass by playing a special version of “Taboo”. Here are some reflections from our Year 3 Team.

“I really enjoyed making the seed models because it was fun to make. It was great to throw it and watch it turn and fly.” Aleks

“I liked playing the card game because it was a challenge to think of other words to use when describing glass. I liked making the patterns because I could create my own using shape blocks and drawing.” Isabel R 

“It was great having different stations of activities because we got to choose which one you liked the best. We could do more than one activity. I also really liked the spinning seed activity, which made the seed fly and spin really fast.” Finn P

“I really liked the video because it was about plastic and how it makes people think about not throwing plastic anywhere. It made me think of how to throw rubbish away by using the right bins.” Charlotte K

Year 4

During STEM, Year 4 created Marble Mazes using various materials. The goal was to begin at the top of a large paper placed on the wall and end at the bottom into a paper cup. Students used curves, jumps, drops and spins to design their maze. Each group used their creativity, design and collaborative skills to create a unique maze. Here are some reflections from Year 4.  

The students have been learning about Forces this term and creating a Gravity presentation. They have been fascinated with the effects of gravity and predicting what would happen if the gravity on Earth disappeared!

Year 5

This week, Year 5 has enjoyed investigating ‘glass’ in science.  We watched videos on how glass is made, the art of glass blowing and an innovative video on making a glass marble. Rich discussion followed. Many students understood that sand makes glass, but were surprised to find:

"A layer of tin is placed under glass, the lighter glass floats on the denser tin, allowing it to dry flat." Ben 

"Workers in the glass factory wore a uniform made of a similar material to bullet proof armour." Isla B

Students were fascinated by the bespoke glass art and marble making video and the time it takes to make one of these creations. 

The students engaged in making our own mini-lava lamps in small glass jars.  We learnt that the process of dispersion between the oil and water in the lamps was similar to that of tin and glass when manufacturing glass.  

Year 6

For National Science Week, Year 6 enjoyed learning more about glass by completing a virtual escape room. A lot of the students already knew that glass was made from sand, but most students were surprised to learn about the global sand shortage and why this is having an impact on glass production. Year 6 then worked in teams to complete challenges and solve problems while learning about the properties of glass and how it’s made.

Some of the activities and challenges included:

• Using tangram glass puzzles
• Exploring the art of glass making and stain glass windows
• Discovering how glass can be created in nature
• Experimenting with refraction by reading coded messages through glasses of water
• Using glass lenses to read very small writing
• Exploring how glass can be infinitely recycled, melted and reshaped without degrading in quality
• Using coloured glass to read coded messages
• Exploring how touch screens work

Indonesian Independence Day 17th August, 1945

Yesterday, we were honoured to receive Mr Vedi Kurnia Buana, Consul General and an accompanying delegation from the Indonesian Consulate in Maroubra.

Mr Thomas took the opportunity to explain the history of the school, to acknowledge Country and to show them our wooden indigenous carving portraying the local totem, Guriwal the whale. 

After the meeting with Mr Thomas the Consul General Bapak Vedi spoke to the children at the Assembly to mark Indonesian Independence Day 17th August, 1945.

I was delighted that our School Captains Simona Preshaw and Sarah Ong were able to receive some lovely gifts to the school from the Consul-General and Indonesia.   

Then Year 3 students were lucky enough to enjoy workshops in dance and angklung, provided by some of the guests. 

Thank you to the wonderful crew of Indonesian parents Debbie and Sugi, Lenny, Stella, Hanvy, Noni, Debora and Darwin, Eric and Susan, Margaretha, James, and all who were able to be on the playground organising the popular games at recess and lunch times. The children were very excited and challenged by some games they had not ever tried before. Well done team!

The Consul General and his colleagues are very interested in what we are doing at Claremont and we have issued an invitation for another visit soon.

Perfect additions to the library collection for National Science week are these books from Australia’s favourite maths teacher Eddie Woo. In 2018, Eddie was named Australia’s Local Hero of the Year and shortlisted as one of the top ten teachers in the world.

Maths YouTube sensation Edddie Woo has teamed up with authors Jess Black and Dave Hartley for the first in the series of Eddie Woo adventures. Eddie and his mates Rusty and DT love a good mystery, and manage to get themselves into all sorts of trouble. The books are a fun mix of mystery, humour, riddles and mathematical thinking. Both books are illustrated by the talented Mitch Vane.
