Concert Wrap Up

What a mixture of emotions we are all presently experiencing – such exhilaration, joy, happiness, satisfaction and pride in our many achievements.  A number of children have commented that they are also feeling extremely sad, basically because they did not want the concert to ever come to an end. “Can we do it again?” asked one boy on Wednesday morning as he arrived at school.  Many parents have commented that the concert defied their expectations and were amazed that we could create such a show in just over 4 weeks. Congratulations once again to our main cast and to every child who performed on the night. You were magnificent! 

Thank you to every member of staff and especially to the Concert Committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes since Term One; Mrs L Cameron, Mrs H Davis (Year 4), Mrs Y  Davis (Music), Mrs E Crerar, Ms J Alexander, Miss A Carter, Ms K Wright, Ms R Shiels, Ms L Ireland, Mrs D Ko, Mrs A Marquet, Ms R DeRossi, Mrs Gonzalez, Mrs S Affleck and Mrs K Wiggins.  Also thank you to our videographer, Troy Sheather (Encore Media) and photographers Miss L Wiggins and Miss E Wiggins (LaraJane Photography) for recording the performance. I am sure you would agree that the costumes were breathtaking and were another highlight of the show. I thank the many parents who also played a significant part in ensuring the success of the show through their involvement in designing, creating and purchasing the costumes, especially Melisse L (Ava Yr 3) and her team including: Kirsty A (Raphael (2), Zephyr (1)), Belinda X (James (4)), Jessica T (Taylor (2), Brody (K)), Jorine F (Max (4), Lisa M (Archie (5)), Natalie T (Connor (4), Lachlan (3), Oliver (2), Hannah (K)),  Sandra S (Xavier (4) Alexander (2)), Amy B (Isla (5)) and James J (Hayden (2) Amelia (K)). Thank you also to the many parents, children and other visitors who sent messages and emails of congratulations and appreciation. We value your encouragement.

Thank you, too, for your generosity on the night. Our concert raised a total of $2,141 for The Royal Hospital for Women Foundation. If you haven’t had a chance to donate, please CLICK HERE. It would be wonderful if the school could raise $2,500 for one humidifier.

Firstly, and most importantly I wish all the Fathers, Grandfathers and the many special men in the lives of children a very happy Fathers’ Day. HAPPY FATHERS' DAY

It was wonderful to celebrate our Fathers’ Day Breakfast this morning. It was awesome to have such a huge gathering of dads, children and staff this morning. Thank you to the wonderful ‘band’ of mothers, led by James J (Hayden (2), Amelia (K)), for the delicious food to kick start the day.

Our School Captains shared a wonderful speech and poem together with a prayer for the dads in attendance. 

I would also like to thank Susan S (Zachary (4), Lucas (2)) and her team of helpers who organised the Fathers’ Day Stall on Thursday.

Save the date for a Fathering Project Event which will be held at the Coogee Diggers Club, 7pm, on Monday 19 September. These gatherings for Claremont fathers provide a good opportunity to meet others, be connected to our school community, and to participate in a discussion around children, their education and parenting. Fourth even BIGGER thing

Given that COVID robbed us of our 2021 Dads’ and Kids’ Camp, we have planned a Claremont College Dads and Kids ‘BIG Day Out’ with a trip to the Jamberoo Action Park on Saturday 12 November. While the exact details are yet to be confirmed, you will need to anticipate a full day. 

Music @ Claremont 

On the back of our wonderful concert Mrs Yasmin Davis and I are pleased to invite you to a special Music Showcase on Tuesday 18 October from 4:30pm-6:00pm. The two years of COVID lockdowns certainly impacted music and performing arts programs in all schools, especially our band and small ensemble groups, so we are keen to bring back the array of wonderful sounds of children learning music in our school. ‘MUSIC@CLAREMONT’ will provide us with the opportunity to introduce our 8 tutors to you (Margaret Machamer - Cello & Senior String Ensemble, Dominique Guerbois - Violin & Junior String, Percy Reddy - Drums & Beginner Guitar, Carlson Luong - Piano, Sam Golding - Brass, Visnja Kosanovic - Flute, Luke Galea - Guitar and Lyndell Pym - Singing), to showcase some of our student and tutor talent as well as presenting a panel which will discuss the many advantages of Music in a child’s learning and academic development. All parents and their children are welcome to attend. 

School Open Day - Thursday 15 September

On Thursday 15 September we will be hosting a Claremont College Open Day. This Open Day is an opportunity for prospective parents, students and their families to visit our school and see student learning in action. Please pass this information onto your family and friends and encourage them to register to attend.

TASC Survey

Could I please encourage all parents to take the time to complete the survey which was emailed to you last Friday. If you did not receive the email, please contact the Office.

Every five years the Anglican Schools Corporation Board commissions a review of each of their schools. This provides an opportunity to reflect on the school’s progress and assists in future planning. An important part of the review process is the surveying of the school community (parents, students and staff). The information collected through the surveys provides the review team with comprehensive data on a broad cross section of the school. All parents are invited to participate in the survey to share their experience of the school. We place importance on our parent voice and the insight provided through the survey is most beneficial. You are encouraged to respond to this invitation to complete the survey.

COVID-19, flu, colds and respiratory illnesses continue to impact our school community. With this in mind, we will continue to maintain our high standards of health and hygiene practices and expectations, and ask you to not hesitate getting in touch with us if you need to discuss your family context or any concerns/questions. 

Our safety measures will remain in place, including:

• Students and staff staying home if they are unwell, and parents refraining from visiting the school if unwell
• The wearing of face masks is highly encouraged.
• Good personal hygiene practices
• Vaccinations up to date (including flu shots)
• The ventilation of our spaces
• Physical distancing and the consideration of how events and gatherings are held

As the pandemic continues it is easy to become complacent, so we ask for your support in being vigilant, as we care for each other and our school community.

We still have RAHT kits available (these are supplied to us free of charge from the State Government). If your family requires any additional kits, please collect them from the school office.

We would like to remind parents that a full term’s notice in writing to the Principal is required before terminating a student's enrolment. The last day for notification is Monday 10 October.  In the event of failure to provide the required notice of withdrawal, a charge equal to 100% of the applicable term’s school fees will become payable, including all outstanding fees and charges, in addition to fees and charges payable in respect to the entire current term.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

In Science this term, students in Year 2 have been developing their science knowledge, understanding and skills through their exploration of sound and sound energy. It has been an exciting topic where students have explored the ways sound is produced, measured and how it travels.

Next week, students will be given a design brief, inviting them to design and make their own musical instrument. To make their musical instrument, we ask that students bring in various materials for them to use from Week 8 (beginning 5 September). This may include but is not limited to the following:

• Cardboard
• Straws
• Rubber bands 
• Metal tins (with no sharp edges)
• Rice 

We are very excited to begin this project with students and see what they create.

Just a reminder that the Australian Girls Choir workshops will be happening on Monday 5 September. We have had such an amazing response with many students registered to participate. Registrations have now closed, and only the girls who have already registered will be taking part.

This year, Indigenous Literacy day will be held on Wednesday 7 September. The Library registered earlier this year to once again support The Great Book Swap. This is an initiative that the Indigenous Literacy Foundation started several years ago. This is a national book industry charity that aims to reduce the disadvantage experienced by children in remote communities across Australia, by lifting literacy levels and instilling a lifelong love of reading. By raising funds this organisation has gifted over 636,000 new books to over 400 remote communities.

Students have been asked to support this initiative by simply bringing in an old, pre-loved book, preferably one that is in reasonable condition and suitable for students in their grade. During library borrowing sessions of week 8 (beginning 5 September), all the donated books will be set out on display in the library and everyone will browse for a book they would like to take in exchange for a gold coin donation. These books can be brought into school any time from now. The donation boxes for each grade are in the library and filling up nicely. If you are unable to donate a book, it would be wonderful if your child could donate a gold coin towards this important initiative.

Book Week Parade

We are all really looking forward to the parade which will take place on the last day of this term. Our theme for this year will link to our 140th year, ‘Remembering the Olden Days Through Books and Stories’. Students and staff have been asked to select a favourite book from the past, dress up as a character from the book, and this year identify which decade the book comes from.

Details of the parade

The parade will start at 9am in the playground but parents can arrive from 8:45am to sign in. The parade will finish at approximately 10:15am. Parents will then be invited to the hall to the book donation stall.

Book Donation Stall 

The Library Boost Project is an exciting fundraising concept that allows schools to fundraise for new books for their own school libraries, while also supporting the most disadvantaged schools across Australia. 

After the parade parents will be invited into the hall to look at a selection of books that they would like to donate to the school. Payment will be by card only on the day and no cash payments please. A donation certificate will be placed in each donated book with family details.

This fundraising initiative will boost our own school library and classroom libraries, but for every dollar that is raised Dymocks Children’s Charities will match the donation to provide Library Regeneration Programs to the most disadvantaged schools in Australia.

New Titles to the Collection

These new titles are perfect timing for Fathers’ Day this week.

This book is a celebration of all the sweet, funny nicknames daddies like to call their little ones. Andrew Daddo is the author of over 30 books for young people, many of which have been translated into a variety of languages. He has had a long career in the Australian entertainment industry. Emma Quay’s illustrations add beauty and warmth to this picture book.

Recommended for ages 3-6 years.

Captain Dad and his crew are having a day at the beach, and of course Dad is bringing his treasure trove of jokes. A day with Dad is ‘shore’ to be hilarious! At least he seems to think so.

Recommended for ages 5-7 years old.

NSWCIS Athletics Championships @ Homebush 

IPSHA Athletics

Well done to the Claremont IPSHA Athletics team who competed at the IPSHA Athletics Carnival at Homebush on Monday. They competed with a sense of enthusiasm and excitement and with a smile on their faces. It was a great day with lots of students experiencing the fun and atmosphere of competing at such a large carnival for the first time. Students relished the opportunity to compete against the large number of schools and push themselves to achieve their own personal best. Many achieved ribbons in their heats and were thrilled to show them off. 

Congratulations to Jade J (Year 6) who came 1st overall in the 100m sprint and will now represent the IPSHA team at the upcoming NSWCIS Championships. 

Term 4 Extra Curricular/Morning Skills Sport

Term 4 Sport information and registration form have been made available on the Claremont app. Please remember to register online for all morning activities as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as some sports have limited positions. 

For billing purposes, registrations will close on Monday 12 September.

Claremont Champions

A fantastic group of Kindy kids got together at the beginning of the year and formed their very own Claremont Soccer Team at Coogee White Tigers. None of them had ever played before. That didn’t deter them from having a lot of fun, learning new skills and learning to play as a team. They ran hard, kicked harder, scored many goals and did many cartwheels and hugs on and off the field. One of the most outstanding aspects of the team was how they played the game, encouraging not only each other but also other teams they played against. It was a great opportunity for the kids and their parents to extend the sense of community outside of Claremont and build wonderful friendships whilst winning some games along the way. They are a credit to both their parents and Claremont.

This week has not just been a celebration of 140 years of Claremont College with the success of a spectacular school concert, but also a celebration of the awesome dads that make up our school community.

On Thursday the school hall was once again turned into a Fathers’ Day stall with a great selection of gifts for the children to select from. Thank you to the wonderful Year 2 grade reps, Kirsty Alexandrou and Susan Setiawan for shopping, organising and preparing 400+ gifts for the stall. It was a huge success and again would not have been possible without the help of a team of mums who packed the gifts the day before, then was part of the “personal shoppers” team, helping the children to select the perfect gift. Thank you to Peita-Maree P, Sandra S, Louisa G, Diana T, Janelle S, Amanda N, Fiona P, Noni P, Louise K, Jade K, Katie F, Di L, Lisa M and Juliet L. As always it was a lot of fun taking the kids around and hearing their comments around the gift choices for their dads, grandads or special friends!

This morning the playground was packed with nearly 300 dads and children as we celebrated our first Fathers’ Day in three years! The food was flowing, the coffee cart was a huge success, memories were captured in the photo booth and the vibe throughout the whole school was one of joy and happiness. Special thanks to our Kindy reps who organised this wonderful event, James Jap, Jessica Taylor and Peita-Maree Pyne. Thank you to the Kindy mums who helped prepare and served everyone this morning: Lily S, Deborah L, Vivi B, Kelly P-J, Alanna R and Irene C

Our community is extraordinary, and I love the way we all continue to come together to support, build, grow and care for our school. We appreciate all the grade reps and parents who continue to volunteer their time and energy. Happy Fathers’ Day and God’s richest blessings to all our dads as we celebrate and honour them this weekend.

We would like to make you aware that the NSW Government has given parents a $500 voucher to use at childcare centres. This is applicable to TeamKids and we encourage you to take advantage of this great scheme. Follow the instructions on the NSW Service website to apply. Then email or bring in the QR code on your voucher so we can scan and redeem it for you. This will be credited to your account to use until June 2023.
