Yesterday was the perfect day to show our support for Orangutan Foundation International. Thank you Bu Jill for inspiring us to take action to protect and care for orangutans. Thank you to all the children and staff who dressed up in orange and brown, and donated money to Orangutan Foundation International. The foundation is committed to the welfare of all orangutans, whether captive, ex-captive, or wild. They also support research and education on orangutans, and provide employment for over 200 local Indonesian people. We are proud to announce that we raised $580 yesterday.

Christmas Has Arrived at Claremont!

Thank you to the parents who helped decorate our school with Christmas decorations on Monday morning. Your help was greatly appreciated. It was lovely to see the children’s faces light up when they saw the big Christmas tree and all the wreaths and ornaments around the school. The magic of Christmas will continue over the next few weeks. For example, every day in Week 7 (starting Monday 21 November), Pixie Post will return. Please encourage your child to write Christmas cards to others within our school, especially to those who may need an extra ‘pick-me-up’. More details about Pixie Post and other Christmas activities will be communicated over the coming weeks.

Christmas Chapel and Kindergarten Nativity Play (details in Kindergarten section)

We are looking forward with great anticipation to our Christmas Chapel, with Kindergarten presenting the Nativity story. We welcome all Kindergarten parents and grandparents to this special Chapel service. We will be holding our Christmas Chapel on the playground at 9am on Friday 25 November. 

School Picnic

Our annual School Picnic will be held on Monday 5 December at Carss Park. This is a special day where students, together with staff, enjoy an ‘end of year celebration’. Students will catch buses to Carss Park and return to school by 3pm. Please note that parents do not attend this day. An event note will be available closer to the date.

Year 6 Events

It is with disbelief that our Year 6 students will be concluding their Claremont experience so soon. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them, and we look forward to the many events that are planned over the coming month. I encourage our Year 6 parents to refer to the Year 6 section of the newsletter over the coming weeks for more specific details of these events, including the Valedictory Dinner, the Final Farewell Assembly and the High School Transition days.

Claremont College’s Annual Speech Day and Prize Giving

It is with great pleasure that we request the honour of your presence for Claremont College’s Annual Speech Day and Prize Giving. This year, due to our usual venue now being permanently unavailable, we will be holding this event at the Science Theatre ((F13), University Mall) at the University of New South Wales. Doors will open at 9am, with formal proceedings commencing at 9:30am. Please note that students are to arrive at the venue with their parent(s) at 9am. The children will be dismissed from the venue at the conclusion of the event, which we anticipate will conclude at approximately 11am.

As today is Remembrance Day, we marked this solemn occasion during both Infants and Primary Chapel services, so that our students and staff could recognise and reflect on the origin of Remembrance Day and the reason that it is still an event of significance today. Today marks the 104th anniversary of the Armistice (the agreement to stop the fighting) at the end of the First World War. Today was originally called Armistice Day, but both the British and Australian Governments changed the name to Remembrance Day which now commemorates all wars. 

Mrs Kesur has also been sharing beautiful stories and videos during this week within the Library Borrowing lessons, so that the students can learn of the incredibly heartwarming, sad, heroic, and challenging situations people find themselves in, in times of war. 

Thank you to Tabitha A and Simona P for leading the Remembrance Day presentation during Chapel and for explaining to the students the significance of many of the ceremonial customs we observe each year at this time, including an explanation of:

• The Laying of Wreaths,
• The Rouse and Reveille,

In 2020 the school introduced new uniforms with a two year transition period. As from Term 1 2023, all students will be required to wear all items of the new uniform.

Please be aware that the girls summer tunic together with the school blazer is required for formal occasions (including Speech Day and school photos). Boys are required to wear the white summer shirt with the school tie and blazer for formal occasions. 

If you need to purchase any new items prior to the commencement of Term 1, please contact the Uniform Shop.  

You would be aware that it is no longer mandatory to self-isolate at home if you test positive to COVID-19. NSW Health strongly recommends however, that people who are sick or have tested positive to COVID-19 stay home until their symptoms have gone.

NSW health strongly recommends that any students or staff member who tests positive for COVID-19 follow the advice outlined in this NSW Health fact sheet . If your child tests positive, please:

• Inform the school via email office@claremont.nsw.edu.au.
• Register the positive RAHT result on the Service NSW App (this is no longer mandatory, however NSW Health continues to strongly recommend doing so).
• Your child must stay home until acute symptoms have gone.
• Your child is strongly encouraged to wear a mask when returning to school, if they are returning within 5 days of testing positive.
• If someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, please monitor your child for symptoms, and complete daily RAHT tests prior to attending school. 
• Please contact the office if you require RAHT kits.  

Previously, we have consistently informed the Claremont community of year groups with positive cases. We will no longer do this for each individual case, but rather when there is an increased risk for a particular cohort, or more broadly across the school.  

At Claremont, as with any infectious health issue, we would ask that you follow these recommendations. Children who display cold, flu, gastro, or other symptoms at school will be sent home. We ask that you continue to remain vigilant and please contact the school if you have any further questions or concerns.

Congratulations to Silia Kapsis (Yr 6 2018), who is about to release her first original song on 18 November.  Apart from landing the role as Nickelodeon's Nick News Host, now airing on Nickelodeon and 10 Shake, Silia is also embarking on her musical journey. Silia's song, Who Am I? Is available to pre order on your preferred music service, such as Spotify, Apple Music, and so on.

Although Silia's song drops on 18 November, by pre-saving the song, it ensures her song is added to your library the moment the song is released.

Silia will be releasing more music early next year, with music videos being filmed in Los Angeles, so there are many more exciting songs to follow.

We can’t wait to see what comes next on her exciting journey!

Yet again, the month of November has rolled around, seemingly quicker than ever this year. As I’m sure you’ve seen advertised, the real name for this month is Movember, a month where many men try to grow as much hair on their upper lip as they possibly can. After the challenges we have all faced over the past 2 years, the message of promoting mental health and wellbeing and speaking up if we are not ok, and reinforcing this message to our children, is even more important than ever in our changing world.

Reflecting on the year that has been 2022, I think all of us have some very mixed feelings. After two tough years in 2020 and 2021, I think many people are now dealing with the after effects of extended lockdowns and isolation periods, and are quickly realising that throughout the past two years, they have struggled and maybe not coped as well as they thought they did. I know myself, 2022 has seen me ‘practise what I preach’ and reach out to check in with people on a few different occasions and discuss the challenges we’ve faced. I’ve become more and more comfortable talking about and discussing this and the way in which, all of us at different times, face obstacles that we can’t face alone. Many blokes around Australia, and the young men of the future we have the pleasure of shaping here at school, still aren’t comfortable sharing and talking about their feelings, which is something I aim to promote and change through fundraising for Movember. If a rugby player ruptured their ACL, they’d go and see a specialist, get surgery, then see a Physio to successfully rehab the injury? Why do we continue to have a stigma around seeking the same help if we’re not alright mentally? How is a psychologist any different? 

Blokes and boys need to continue to be encouraged to talk, express themselves and reach out when they are really not ok. The tides are turning, and things really are changing, but the job is not over. Positivity fills the air when discussing what the image of a “strong man” looks like with the Year 6 boys. These young individuals are beginning to understand the importance of kindness, generosity and empathy, but we must continue to highlight that we need to show ourselves these same qualities. Talk to each other, don’t expect people to be mind readers and when you’re not ok, express that. It’s amazing actually facilitating some of these conversations with the boys in Year 6, seeing the lightbulb moment when they realise another individual they may idolise or assume is super confident, battles some of the same insecurities as themselves. These conversations are so important to have with the young men of the world and equip them with the power to change the way mental health, and especially mental health in the males of the world is perceived. It’s something that I think we can all see, the men of the world aren’t the greatest at communicating their feelings at times. 

Movember aims to improve men's health outcomes in a variety of ways, but I believe mental health programs and the promotion of blokes talking about their struggles and reaching out for help continues to be an integral part of changing the face of men's health. I’ve done Movember for a number of years now, and am always sincerely thankful for any donations I receive. This year more than ever, as I mentioned earlier, I am very conscious of the difficult situations many individuals find themselves in and am extremely grateful for any donations. If you can bypass that trip to the coffee shop in the morning and spare a few dollars, I’d really appreciate any support. I’ve posted the link below.

I sincerely hope everyone within our Claremont community enjoys a restful Christmas break which is quickly approaching! Check in on your friends, male or female, make sure they’re alright and open up some of the conversations we are often all tentative to have. Like we say to the Year 6 students, you could be the one spark that changes someone's day.

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

We are excited to invite parents to our Annual Kindergarten Nativity Performance. The Nativity will take place during our Chapel service on Friday 25 November at 9am for approximately 30 minutes. This is a wonderful Claremont tradition and is always a fantastic event where Kindergarten will be re-enacting the Christmas story for Kindergarten parents and grandparents to watch. More information will be sent home next week in your child’s diary, outlining your child’s specific role and costume suggestions.

Kindergarten & Year 1 Swimming Intensive

During Week 7 (Week beginning 21 November), Kindergarten and Year 1 will be transported by bus to UNSW each day for a 30 minute lesson with qualified Austswim instructors, as well as a number of supervising staff. These lessons make up part of the students’ normal school day and we ask that parents do not attend. Swimming is an important part of our curriculum and indeed our Australian culture, and we expect to see the aquatic skills and confidence of our students greatly improve during this program. 

Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 may wear their full sports uniform to school each day of the week. By allowing students to change with ease, this will maximise swimming and learning time, and we believe it will be more comfortable for students throughout the day. Students should wear formal hats to and from school and ensure they wear white sports shoes and white socks. 

Claremont swimming costumes and house swimming caps can be purchased from the uniform shop.

The Claremont sports bag should be brought each day, in addition to their school bag, with a towel, goggles, underwear and thongs or sandals (for travelling to and from the pool). For safety, thongs or sandals are not to be worn to and from school. The Claremont swimming costume may be worn under the sports uniform, and girls often prefer to wear it with the shoulder straps down to assist when using the bathroom during the day. Students will be getting changed at school prior to heading to the lessons and back into uniform when they return.

We are looking forward to our students participating in a tailored and expertly delivered program with high staff to student ratios.

Year 2 Pizza & Pyjama Party

Excitement and nerves were in the air (and that was just the parents!) as Year 3 headed off on their first Claremont School Camp.

As we drove into the Winmalee campsite in Blue Mountains, a cheer went up throughout the bus! We hit the ground running on our first day, participating in activities such as the flying fox, swimming pool, bush walk (mind the leeches), orienteering and bush craft. Do you know how to create a shelter in the Australian bush? Do you know how to wrestle someone off a log and into a pool? Are you brave enough to launch yourself off a 10m ledge in a cage? These are all things our Year 3 students faced while on camp. Many students were even brave enough to try a range of new foods! During Christian Discovery time, we had fun learning many new things about Jesus and singing new worship songs in the outdoor chapel. At night time, Year 3 played games on the large grassy oval - including searching for their fancy-dress clad teachers! We were all so impressed with the program, Cru leaders and weather at this camp. The teachers are incredibly proud of every student’s positive attitude, resilience and sense of fun throughout the whole camp.

Year 3 Teaching Team

There were so many mixed emotions last Wednesday morning when the students arrived at school and were getting organised to leave for camp. They were very well prepared and raring to go! 

The bus ride to Galston Gorge was full of laughter and singing, and when arriving on site the students were eager and respectful when following the CRU leaders instructions. 

The activities included raft building, Christian studies, singing, challenge courses, rope climbing and the crowd favourite was crate climbing - Miss Alexander braved a climb and impressed the students! There was no shortage of food and mealtimes were a lovely time for all students and staff to connect and reflect on their camp experience. 

The bus ride home was much quieter and the students were excited to be heading home, however some commented that they would love camp to last longer. One student even slept on their bedroom floor in a sleeping bag that night because they said they missed camp so much! 

“Crate climbing was my favourite activity because you could climb as high as you wanted and archery was fun. And being with your friends for the whole day was fun too!” Xavier P

Both students and teachers had an incredible time at camp.  As teachers, we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our students even more and were proud of how well every student embraced the challenges presented to them, engaged in the Christian education and built stronger relationships with their peers.  Their laughter and smiles are something we will never forget, and rather than tell you all about their camp experience, we have decided to hand it over to some of our students:

“On 2nd November, Year 5 went to camp. We had a great time! Here are some of the highlights of our trip. This must be everyone’s favourite….drumroll please…. The Giant Swing!!! A rope is pulled,with the help of your classmates, to the top and then you have to pull a rope to propel you! I have to admit I definitely shed a tear. Cabins… mine was a mess!, but the highlight for some people would definitely be the cabins. Why? Here is one reason - friends! Even if you weren’t with your best friend we got to know each other and still had a great time. Fun! Who doesn’t like messing around?  Sleep? The Vertical Cluster, another physical challenge at camp, was lots of fun to climb and belay. There were a ton of different complex and challenging routes to climb. I think everyone had a great time at Stanwell Tops and must be getting excited for our next camp already.” Louka S

“Another activity that was fun was the ‘Monsters Lair’ game. This should have been copyrighted, but luckily it wasn't. The game was played by groups of students. The aim of the game was to find 5 secret messages.  These messages were obtained by interacting with ‘monsters’. The monsters were teachers and camp leaders dressed up!”  Anonymous

Year 5 Camp Team

Year 6 students were lucky enough to venture to Lake Macquarie for our second camp of the year. We asked some of our Year 6 students to reflect on their experience and time away.

This camp was a great way to wrap up Year 6 and all of us really enjoyed it. All of our activities were spread out over our 3 days at the Lake Macquarie campsite. The first day we did fishing, sailing and a bush walk. In 6W when we went fishing, no one caught anything and the winds were definitely up! In 6G, Enzo caught a dirty, barnacle-covered, plastic chair, which was a definite help to the environment. Next thing we did was sailing. The water was surprisingly warm but really cold when the wind came. The water was splashing everywhere and we got soaked, but it was still really fun. After that, we went on a scary bush walk. We had to climb over rocks and try not to fall into the water. We also had to cross planks of wood that were relying on tyres to hold them up. One of the camp leaders, Claire, got her foot stuck in a super small hole but luckily she got her foot out eventually! 

In the morning the camp leaders banged super hard on our door to wake us up. The second day we did rock climbing, abseiling and mission impossible. Abseiling was really fun. It was scary in the moment but once you faced your fears it was a great experience. When rock climbing almost everyone made it to the top! It was such a fun experience, especially jumping from the top to the floor. Mission Impossible was all about teamwork. We had to complete really hard challenges to make it to the end of the course. After that we had to go on a 1km hike to the campsite. Once we got there we prepared spaghetti bolognese for dinner, then we helped set up the tents we would have to sleep in. Later, we sat around the campfire eating jelly and telling stories. I think that the highlight of the evening for everyone was roasting marshmallows in the raging, mesmerising campfire. After that it was time for bed. Everyone woke up at 4:30am with the first signs of light! We had some breakfast and shortly after, we headed home back to the main campsite. It was a super fun experience!

We think camp was a great opportunity to strengthen our friendships just before we go off to different high schools. Throughout all our time at and beyond primary school, we will definitely remember this camp and all the memories that came with it.

This term at Claremont, the Eco Warriors have been working on some exciting new projects. Earlier this term, we were selected as one of the first schools to be part of a FOGO trial with Randwick Council. At the moment, Year 6 and the canteen are using their new FOGO bins to recycle food scraps and organic waste. During Pastoral Care groups, students from K-6 have also learnt about what waste goes in their FOGO bins and how they can help their families use these more at home.

We are also very pleased to announce that Claremont has been awarded a $5000 grant from Randwick Council which will go towards increasing our green space at Claremont. One of our projects for next year involves creating edible gardens in various locations around the school to teach students about gardening and get them excited about the process of growing produce. The second project involves planting more native plants and trees around Claremont. One of our priorities within this project is learning about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures used plants for different purposes. We will be providing more updates next year as we begin work on these two projects.

National Recycling Week

This week is National Recycling Week. Throughout the week, students have been learning all about ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, with the aim to minimise the strain on finite resources in our environment.

Students from K-6 have had guest speakers talk to them about the importance of recycling, and some grades have even started a competition to see which students can begin to recycle at home.

On Friday in Pastoral Care groups, Year 5 and 6 did a great job at teaching and reminding students about how we can do a better job at recycling at school and at home.

New Books Titles To The Collection

This is the true story of the young nurse, Sister Alice Ross-King who left Australia in 1914 for the war. Nursing was her passion and all she had ever wanted to do. She served four long years and was brave, humble and endlessly compassionate.The war diary entries in the book are actual extracts from Alice’s diaries.The Australian Department of Defence has described her as the most decorated woman in Australia.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that captures the danger and heartache of war. The simple but powerful illustrations are interspersed with photographs and maps from this time in history which allows children of all ages a glimpse into what the world was like during World War 1.

The author Kate Simpson is actually the great-granddaughter of Alice Ross-King. 

Recommended for children aged 7 - 11 years old but this is a book that can be appreciated by all ages.

Claremont Champions

Congratulations to Joshua S (Year 3) who has been enjoying playing tennis and has been moved up to a green ball level at the start of term 4. Last Sunday was his first competition at the green ball level at Coogee Beach Tennis and he won.

Over the past two weeks, Georgina and Charlotte K (Year 5 & 3), Dion and Jaymie T (Year 5 & 3) and Arella J (Year 5) have all undertaken exams, in their respective grades, with the Royal Academy of Dance. They will not know their results until late November.

These girls have all also participated in a number of individual and group Eisteddfod competitions. This group of girls have been working tremendously hard over the last 12 months and have shown dedication, perseverance and passion to this form of art. As dancers they have grown and developed their individual dance skills but what has become apparent is that they have shown an amazing ability to support each other through the challenges and the rewards that ballet and dance brings. Well done to these inspiring young ladies.

Charlotte and Jaymie, came first in their troupe Lyrical dance. Georgina, Dion and Arella's group were placed second in their Lyrical and highly commended for Jazz. St Andrew’s Cathedral School will offer one full or part scholarship to a Claremont student (boy or girl) for entry into Year 7 2024. This scholarship is in recognition of the excellent relationship between the two schools, and acknowledgement of the high standard of Claremont graduates. The scholarship, and amount of scholarship will be based on the following criteria:

• Results in the ACER Scholarship Selection Test which will be run at Claremont late February or early March 2024 TBC.
• Demonstrated commitment to school life at Claremont through Music, Drama, Sport, Leadership or other school programs
• School reports and NAPLAN.

Dear Parent/Carer

Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2024, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply and the link to the online form will be available in early-October 2022 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

Applications open on 18 October 2022 and close on 16 November 2022. You must apply before the closing date.

You must submit only ONE application for each student.

The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.

Ordering

Orders can be placed for both recess and lunch through an online ordering system called Flexischools (www.flexischools.com.au). You can also download the app and order from any smartphone or tablet device. Orders are required to be placed by 8.30am on the day the order is required, however, you can place orders up to four weeks in advance.

Term 4 Bookings

A reminder for ALL families to book and verify their bookings for Term 4. Also, if your child is away or will not be attending a pre-booked session, please assist by contacting Customer Service to cancel your booking on the day. Please note this has an impact on the service’s staffing for each session.

We would like to make you aware that the NSW Government has given parents a $500 voucher to use at childcare centres. This is applicable to TeamKids and we encourage you to take advantage of this great scheme. Follow the instructions on the NSW Service website to apply. Then email or bring in the QR code on your voucher so we can scan and redeem it for you. This will be credited to your account to use until June 2023.

Applications are now open for students to apply for a School Opal Card for 2023. If a student currently does not hold a School Opal Card and is eligible, they may visit the below website for more information.

Please remember that all school students MUST tap on and off with their Opal Cards. Every time a student taps on and off, they are counted on our service – when they do not, they are invisible. Transport for NSW has the option of withdrawing school bus routes which show low patronage data.
