Shalom - peace be with you
I have very much enjoyed speaking at Chapel across this term as we have explored the theme ‘Blessed is the Peacemaker’. Our weekly online Chapel has been such a blessing, and I am incredibly grateful to Mrs Knoll for her passion and commitment (which has been unwavering across almost the entire year), to create a meaningful and special experience for us all each week. I am so glad that for so many children, our weekly online Chapel service is a highlight. I do hope, however, that we can gather in the hall from the beginning of 2021.
As we head into the final few weeks of 2020, and with Christmas in view, I am strengthened and comforted by a couple of thoughts. Firstly, I love the reminder that Jesus is the ‘Prince of Peace’. When many of us are still feeling tired, overwhelmed and perhaps anxious about the details of our lives, my prayer is that each person, and each family, in our school community will know the precious peace that comes from knowing and trusting in Jesus.
Recently, while I was preparing a Chapel talk on the topic of ‘Peace’, I was chatting to my neighbour, a Jewish man, and I asked him what does ‘Shalom’ (Hebrew for peace) mean to him. I was moved and impacted by his answer. My neighbour told me that ‘shalom’ doesn’t just mean an absence of conflict, but it also implies completeness, soundness, wellbeing, contentment, friendship and much more. Shalom is a powerful word. With this in mind, this week in Chapel, I encouraged the children to use the word ‘shalom’ in their Pixie Post Christmas Cards. I think this is a lovely and most pertinent blessing that we can all be using, as we get close to the finishing line of 2020, and begin to anticipate the year that lies ahead.
And thinking about 2021...
There is much I am excited about when it comes to 2021. To start with, our new Kindy students are full of energy and enthusiasm. It is a great privilege for me to be part of the planning team, as we put things in place to ensure a smooth and positive transition for these awesome little people. I really love that each and every year I kind of get to start Kindy again and again. When I started school back in 1971, I apparently screamed every day for two weeks solid - I am getting better as the years roll on. My wife says that I have never grown up. This is one reason why I love my job!
Even though these final few weeks are full and demanding, Mrs Ford and Mrs Cameron are busy too, preparing for important priorities for 2021. We are also very close to completing all of our staff recruitment needs as we fill the last of the positions vacant. I am delighted with the new staff who will be joining our team.
Anyhow, with just seven full school days remaining, we are working with great enthusiasm. It will be a very special conclusion to 2020. While I may not get to see you in person at our usual end of year events, I do hope that you prioritise joining us for the Kindy Nativity at next week’s online Chapel Service (it is going to be beautiful!) and of course at our Virtual Speech Day Event on 2 December.
Shalom!
