Year 4 & Year 6 ICAS Competitions

Each year we invite the Year 4 and Year 6 students to participate in the ICAS English and Mathematics Competitions. The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools, or ICAS for short, is an independent, skills-based assessment program. Students who sit for an assessment will receive a certificate and a detailed summary of the questions they know and the questions they have not mastered yet.

For over 10 years now we have chosen to participate in these two assessments or competitions for two reasons:

• To give students a challenging external assessment in their Primary year that is not a NAPLAN year, and
• To challenge the students through a competition that is set beyond grade expectations, against schools from around the world, to recognise academic excellence.

This year parents are asked to go online to register your child. You will be able to access practice papers online as well. To do this you will need to visit https://pay.unswglobal.com.au/ and enter the school unique code 68efff86f7 to make a direct payment to UNSW Global. 

The online payment option has been extended to 14 August 2019.

We strongly encourage you to register your child to give them this experience and to help both the parents and the school can understand where a child sits against an international cohort. to quote James Nottingham: "Easy is boring, challenge is interesting"...let's give our students this opportunity to be challenged.

PLEASE NOTE: It is possible to purchase and complete English and Mathematics practice tests online. As students will be completing the assessments on the school iPads, it is suggested that students who are interested in sitting the ICAS Assessments trial at least one online test at home on an iPad. Year 6 Photography Exhibition

Throughout this term, Year 6 students have been working on experimenting with a number of different photography techniques and categories. They have produced some amazing photographs which they have collated into their individual portfolios. These have formed their Visual Art Photography assignment.

To showcase some of their work, we will be hosting a Photography Exhibition on Friday 2 August, in Week 2 of Term 3. We invite Year 6 parents and friends to view the exhibition. It will start at 5:30pm and conclude at 6:30pm.

Year 6 are very excited to be presenting their hard work and we look forward to seeing you there.

K-6 Term 3 Morning Skills Sports Programs

Term 3 Sport information and registration form have been made available on your Parent Portal. Please remember to register online for all morning/lunchtime activities as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as some sports have limited positions, particularly infants programs. Programs commence from Week 2.

TRIVIA NIGHT

The Claremont College bi-annual Trivia Night fundraiser will be held on Saturday 17 August at Maroubra Seals (Auditorium).  This event is always sold out, so get in early and purchase your tickets for $30 per person via Flexischools - friends and family welcome! 

We are very excited to introduce our new Brass Tutor, Eamon Dilworth.

Eamon Dilworth is a Sydney-based trumpeter, songwriter, vocalist and educator. He is a graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium in jazz and has released three critically acclaimed albums of original jazz music. He now applies this background to a multitude of other genres — performing, recording and touring with artists as diverse as Ed Kuepper, Tijuana Cartel, Caravana Sun and The Aints. He has studied and toured across Australia, New Zealand and Europe, including Italy. His latest project, Crawfish Po’Boys, showcases his skill as a vocalist and songwriter, bringing together some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians to create New Orleans-inspired dance music for everyone to enjoy.

Eamon currently teaches brass at Marcellin College Randwick, Wenona School and Kincoppal Rose Bay in addition to conducting at Randwick PS and teaching improvisation at UNSW.

High flow acrylic, making stained glass leaves, pottery that appears to move, drawing windy scenes and optical illusions.  This term, we have enjoyed exploring Movement in our Mixed Media classes on Monday and Wednesday and various Drawing Styles during our Thursday Classes.  Our Art community is growing!

Great news for Creative Arts, you can use your NSW Creative Vouchers $100 with us.  Please select the correct product that states ‘Using Creative Voucher’ and provide the exact name on the voucher, date of birth and the 15 digit voucher number so we can process it at our end. Use the fields during checkout.  Please note that you can get this via the NSW Services Website and it is available for each child to use once per year.

Artisan at Home Workshops

With an increasingly digital world, coding and other computing skills are becoming essential for the future. Code Create runs fun and exciting coding classes for students of any age, introducing and extending them into this digital world. We teach classes ranging from Minecraft Modding, exploring the basics of computing and coding fundamentals, to Web Development where they can get the freedom to design and build their own website. There may even be a chance to explore one of the most popular coding languages today called Python, which can be used for anything ranging from work automation to web applications (used in websites such as YouTube, Spotify, Airbnb, etc.). If this excites you, come join us every Monday afternoon, 3:30pm - 4:30pm. No previous coding experience required.

Code Create has requested that all students enrol via clicking HERE whether you are a new student or existing student.

Classes will run from 29 July to 23 September.

Term 3 offers some delicious recipes for the kids to make. 

Little Rainbow Chefs is for Kindy up and our classes are on a Tuesday afternoon from 3:30pm – 4:30pm. We focus on teaching the children cooking skills, cutting, peeling and measuring accurately using our safety equipment. Next term some of the things we will be making are: 

Meatball and tomato sub rolls;
Chocolate and raspberry tiramisu;
A healthy banana bread, and
Roasted pumpkin soup with crunchy croutons.

Rainbow Chefs is for Grades 5 & 6, and will run on Monday afternoons from 3:30pm – 4:30pm. We aim to teach new cooking skills and to make some delicious recipes that the students can recreate at home. Next term we will be making:

Some winter warmers,
Apple and custard danishes,
Mexican beef enchilada bake,
Chicken and corn noodle soup, and
Chocolate caramel slice.

The Canteen is open 5 days a week. Please place your orders via Flexischools.

Please note that children who bring their own food to school need to bring their own cutlery from home, and only children who have ordered a canteen item will be provided with a spoon or fork.

Also due to WHS issues, the canteen is unable to heat food brought from home.

All members of the extended Claremont family are warmly invited to come along and pray for our school community. Toddlers are also more than welcome.

The prayer group meets fortnightly on Thursdays at 8:45am. Please sign in at the school office.

The dates for Term 3 are 1 August, 15 August, 29 September, 12 September and 26 September.

The Uniform Shop is open every Wednesday fortnight from 8am - 9am.  

The dates for Term 3 are 24 July, 7 August, 21 August, 4 September and 18 September.

The Uniform Shop is situated below the School Hall with entry via the small gate next to the units. Whether you can make it at this time or not, parents are encouraged to place online orders (especially if you are purchasing accessories) via Flexischools. Please note, the Uniform Shop does not accept any second hand clothing except for Claremont school uniforms. It is very inconvenient if you leave other items. Thank you.
