This article aims to discuss the purpose of learning a language in Primary School and why it is part of the learning opportunities at Claremont College.

There are 3 focus areas: interacting, understanding texts and creating texts. Within these focus areas:

  • Knowledge of language systems is applied and essential to communication.
  • Intercultural capability is a key outcome: the capacity to exchange, understand, and create meaning between people and across languages and cultures.

Across each stage of learning, all focus areas are taught. The diagram is an overview of the Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus. (ref., NESA Curriculum)

Learning a language improves literacy outcomes in first and additional languages and increases metalinguistic awareness. Students also develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world and the importance of global citizenship. They engage with the world’s linguistic and cultural diversity and develop respect, openness and empathy.

Our primary objective is not to achieve fluency through just one 40-minute lesson each week. In fact, 'Modern Languages' is not a mandatory part of the curriculum in Primary Schools; languages are considered an enriching addition. The focus of our language program is to foster a love of interaction, celebrate cultural diversity, and ensure that students enjoy the learning process. For those students who are already fluent in Indonesian, we provide a differentiated program tailored to their needs, allowing every learner to thrive at their own pace.

Our school is dedicated to including an Asian language to enhance our students' intercultural understanding of one of our near neighbours. We take pride in offering a language that is native to some of our Claremont families, emphasising the importance of fostering respect for diverse cultures. Each year, our Indonesian Teacher, Bu Jill, provides our Year 2-6 students with the unique opportunities to engage in authentic Indonesian activities, supported by the Indonesian Consul General and the Indonesian Consulate.
